Johnny Bench Home Run Collection
1976 World Series, Home Run #2 in Game 4. - The Last World Series Home Run of Bench's Career
Leading 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 1976 World Series, the Reds were confident that they would soon complete a sweep of the Yankees to secure a second straight World Championship. With one swing of the bat, Johnny Bench turned that confidence into near absolute certainty. Bench lines the first pitch he saw from Yankee reliever Dick Tidrow over the wall in left field for a three-run home run that gave the Reds a 6-2 lead. The Machine tacked on another run in the inning and, after the Yankees were retired in order in the bottom of the inning, the Reds were World Champions for the second year in a row, a title that cemented the Big Red Machine's place in the pantheon of the greatest teams in baseball history. The home run was the second of the game for Bench and part of an incredible World Series performance that resulted in the Reds' catcher taking home Series MVP honors. Bench's ninth inning home run in Game 4 of the 1976 World Series was his ninth career postseason home run and his fifth and last home run in World Series play.
