The 1971 All-Star Game played at Detroit's Tiger Stadium was a battle of the long ball as all of the game's runs were scored via home runs. The six home runs hit in the game tied a then- All-Star Game record. Johnny Bench kicked off the home run barrage with one out in the second inning when he belted a Vida Blue offering to deep right-centerfield. Willie Stargell scored in front of Bench to give the NL a 2-0 lead. The NL's lead expanded to 3-0 on a solo home run by Hank Aaron in the third but the advantage proved to be short-lived as the AL took the lead on the strength of two-run home runs by Reggie Jackson and Frank Robinson in the bottom of the inning. Jackson's home run famously hit a light tower on Tiger Stadium's roof. Harmon Killebrew added a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the AL's lead to 6-3. Roberto Clemente's solo homer in the eighth rounded out the scoring as the AL won the game, 6-4. Bench's home run was the second of three he hit in All-Star competition.
Now, the Reds Hall of Fame's Johnny Bench Home Run Collection, gives you the opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind commemorative of this historic home run. Bench has signed and numbered 389 baseballs representing each of his career regular season home runs. In addition, Bench has signed and inscribed baseballs representing each of his postseason and All-Star game home runs. Each Official Major League baseball in the collection features the exclusive Reds Hall of Fame Johnny Bench Collection logo and is housed in a deluxe frame that includes an elegantly designed photograph that identifies the home run. By purchasing a home run from the Collection, you become the owner of that home run in perpetuity. A personalized Certificate of Ownership accompanies each home run and the designated name of the owner of the home run is listed on the Museum's online Johnny Bench Home Run Collection database.
